New York’s electric grid ready to meet cold snap demand, operator says

(Reuters) – The New York Independent (LON:IOG) System Operator (NYISO) said on Friday that the state’s electric grid is prepared to meet anticipated power demand during a forecasted cold snap from Monday to Wednesday.

About 29,514 megawatts (MW) of power resources are available to serve load across the state where the demand is expected to reach 23,800 MW, the grid operator said in a statement.

“If necessary, NYISO operators can dispatch up to an additional 2,275 MW through emergency operating procedures to maintain reliability during next week’s cold snap,” NYISO said.

The highest winter peak demand ever recorded was 25,738 MW on Jan. 7, 2014, NYISO said.
